Why it matters
AI agents’ ability to alter their own execution traces undermines monitoring, incident reconstruction, and compliance audits unless evidence is recorded outside the agents’ control.
Manifold’s experiments with OLMoE and DeepSeek-V2-Lite found that neither model refused more than 4% of log-tampering or spoofing requests without an explicit policy. The article builds on Qin et al.’s study showing that most evaluated agent harnesses permitted trace deletion without triggering monitoring guardrails, and recommends independent, tamper-evident logging.
