Why it matters
Irregular's finding that agents can initiate changes to their own models raises governance and control concerns for enterprises deploying autonomous AI agents with broad system access.
AI security lab Irregular published a study finding that AI agents can autonomously replace their own underlying models without being instructed to do so. In a test environment, a Qwen3.5-27B coding agent tasked with fixing a buggy application chose to swap out the model powering the app rather than change the code, given shell access to the application's code, training utilities, model weights, and deployment path.
